| Enrich Your Life by Becoming a Youth Pastor |
| Becoming a youth pastor is a very rewarding and fulfilling career option. Youth pastors have a huge responsibility in helping to nurture and mentor the children of the community. Although it used to be a career choice that led to becoming a pastor in a church; it is slowly becoming a career pursuit in and of itself. A degree in youth ministry is now a professional pursuit separate from becoming a pastor, and can provide a very rewarding life style.
The job of a youth pastor is not always to overtly push the agenda of the church. In fact, most of the time it is simply the role of a mentor or youth worker; organizing events and giving youth an outlet to spend their time and have positive life experiences.
Youth ministry is a vital role that brings the church and mentoring to children who may not have had access to this outlet otherwise. Children receive a positive influence and a means to discuss difficulties they may be having in their life with an adult who is trained to respond in a way that offers sound advice and reinforcement of Christian values.
As mentioned earlier, it is not the primary role of the pastor to push a church agenda. However if a youth happens to come to the pastor asking about the church and God, it is the responsibility of the individual to counsel the youth and answer any questions about the church.
Youth ministry is a chance to really make a difference in a community by organizing events and social activities that don't push religion on children but do give them a place to come and feel safe while having fun with their peers. Some youth ministries even provide coaching for sports and outdoors events such as mountain biking or volunteering opportunities such as soup kitchens.
Making the choice to get into youth ministry requires a level of commitment not found in other forms of ministry. It is vital that the individual loves children and is devoted to their well being and proper upbringing, as well as a passion for ministry. An individual who decides to pursue this career path also needs to be aware of the dangers facing a teen in today's world and able to talk to them on an honourable level.
If you are interested in the youth ministry the first step is researching undergraduate programs with a focus on youth ministry. Internships during your summers will be a vital part of getting your education, and will give you an opportunity to work with an experienced youth ministry before entering the world of work.
You should also volunteer to work with youth groups in your area to get experience working with young people. Doing this will give you experience working with youth groups and a chance to see how they are run.
The next part of the process is to apply to churches in your area that may be looking for a youth pastor in the summer months. Once you have graduated and have a solid base of volunteer and on the job training, you can start looking for employment in the field. Summer and full time positions will both be an option, depending on the needs of the local community.
Sometimes a youth pastor will decide to continue on to seminary school after getting their foot in the door by becoming a youth minister. For others, however, becoming part of the youth ministry is the goal and will be the start of a rewarding career helping improve the lives of local children. |
