Getting Started on Your Golf Career
If sitting behind a desk just isn’t for you and haggling on Wall Street sounds less than exciting, then you need to seriously think about starting your golf career. While golf may seem like just a game, it is really a multi-billion dollar a year industry that requires skilled, educated, and personable individuals to manage courses, run clubs, and market all the elements of the game. If you love the game of golf, then you have the ability to turn it into a secure, high paying job!

There is a wide variety of the types of unique golf jobs within the field of golf. First, there is the course manager. This individual is responsible for the operations and management of everything related to the physical location, from the trimming of the hedges to the maintenance of the greens. They handle the business side of things, including hiring and placing staff members, as well as the public relations. If the course is private, then the course manager can be a high profile personality who attends member meetings and addresses complaints in person. On public courses, the course manager may have an active role in the general operations of the club or have additional duties outside of landscaping and crew maintenance.

Another fabulous golf career is as an instructor. Being a good teacher who can not only reach out to people but help them learn a new skill is a real gift. Courses across the country, actually across the world, are always looking to hire an instructor who can not only work well with people of all ages but can also teach people the intangibles, like a real love for the game. Instructors need to be knowledgeable in the nuances of the game and different techniques, as well as be comfortable with status as a minor celebrity. In many ways, instructors are the most well known faces on the course due to their day to day contact with the members and golfers.

These are but two examples of the types of career options available, and while they are very different in terms of the skills required, there is one thing that every individual looking to start a golf career needs: a love of the game. A passion for the sport is really the most important trait a golf professional needs. The skills can be learned, the rules can be taught, but an enthusiasm for the game and a willingness to share that enthusiasm with others has to come authentically from within.

Perhaps the best part about a golf career, regardless of the specific job you choose, is how secure the industry is. While other business industries are collapsing left and right, the golf industry seems impervious to the economic storms and continues to not only survive but truly flourish. And there is little wonder why: golf is a game that can be played from the time you are two years old until you are ninety two years old, by men or women anywhere in the world. It is the only real universal sport that can be enjoyed by families, spouses, business partners, and strangers alike. It has maintained a serious presences since it first became popular at the turn of the twentieth century, and in the early years of the twenty first century this dynamic game shows no signs of fading into the night. So think outside the cubicle and consider starting you golf career. All you have to lose is the boring nine to five lifestyle and a fear of losing your job. Sounds like a hole in one!
