| Do You Have What it Takes to Teach Golf? |
| Teaching anything can be extremely difficult. Students are varied and their learning styles can fluctuate greatly. However, teaching subject matter is not just limited to school buildings and traditional subjects. Creative and active outlets are available. For example, have you ever thought about the possibility of teaching golf? If you have been reading all the golf articles in sport magazines, feverishly searching the web for the newest advancements in the equipment of the game, or building shrines in your house to some of the most famous players of the game, you probably have the ambition and the drive to consider a career as a golf instructor. Individuals who are passionate about the sport may be thrilled by the prospect, but it takes more than passion to successfully teach golf to those who need instruction. You must also be willing to commit yourself to continuously perfecting your work. Instructors should constantly be striving for more, just as they push their students. Passion and dedication are vital, but these are not the only lifestyle aspects to consider.
First and foremost, an education is your best asset in most golf teaching situations. As with many other teaching positions, it is not enough to simply be casually familiar with the subject. Playing golf every weekend will not inherently make one a superior candidate to teach golf to others. There are a number of schools, classes and instruction formats which can help an individual learn to teach. Theory and real life practice is always involved. However, certain skills and personality traits will likely allow individuals to determine whether or not they might have a propensity to excel in the field of teaching golf; after all, who would want to waste money pursuing an education in an area for which they simply are not well suited?
Golf is all about patience and focus. So is teaching. Therefore, it would stand to reason that golf instruction would require a good deal of patience. Being patient with the game, the players, questions and situations are all vital to being a successful golf instructor. Some individuals wanting to learn about the game will have absolutely no familiarity with it. Will you be able to break things down for them and understand their questions, frustrations and limits? Other students will be more familiar with the game, but still need an instructor to help them perfect their techniques. Do you have what it takes to respectfully correct what may be bad form habits or other incorrect manners when it comes to the game?
Think back to your favorite teacher. Odds are, they were approachable, knowledgeable and friendly. Are you able to come off this way to prospective students? In order to convey knowledge in a meaningful manner, it is important for you to be able to connect with your students. If one decides to teach golf as a professional, they have the opportunity to work for a company or work for themselves as a freelance instructor. There are benefits to both options and both provide instructors with the opportunity to help others.
Lastly, can you commit to a professional appearance, educational demonstrations, constructive criticism, empathy and communication? These are just some of the most important customs of a successful golf teacher which may be advantageous to your career. The opportunity to teach golf can be a dream come true for those who possess all the necessary skills and personality traits, but this dream is best transpired when a formal and professional education is involved as well. |
